No more varsities please: Officials
HYDERABAD: A high-power committee has recommending setting up a new university each in Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana, but the education department is not enthusiastic about it.
Mandarins in the department think the state already has enough universities, 23, six of them of the conventional, multi-purpose kind. Then, a new setup would cost nothing less than Rs 50 crore.

The committee's recommendations for the three new universities is soon to be submitted to the government. If it is accepted, varsities will come up in Nalgonda or Karimnagar in Telangana, Kadapa in Rayalaseema and Vizianagaram or East or West Godavari.
Though there is no immediate requirement for a conventional university in Rayalaseema, the government wants to establish one at Kadapa since it is the headquarters of YSR's native district, a senior official said.
Currently, two universities in Rayalaseema Sri Krishnadevaraya and Sri Venkateswaracater to students from Anantapur, Kadapa, Chittoor and Kurnool.
"The government should have strengthened the infrastructure and faculty of the existing varsities instead of establishing one more," said another senior official.
In Telangana, OU has been catering to Hyderabad, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad and RR districts. Kakatiya varsity serves students from Warangal, Khammam, Karimnagar and Adilabad.
Andhra University caters to Vizag, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, East and West Godavari. Nagarjuna varsity covers Krishna, Guntur, Prakasham and Nellore.
